It took about an hour and several dozen sneezes. Finally finished, Mu lifted up his new translation, ran an approving eye down it, then gave a nod and stood up from the desk.

No hiccups. No coughing. Amazing. If only Lara’nelle could have seen him now.

Mu pushed the new parchment into his pocket. He couldn’t help but wonder what had happened to Darli. Had she escaped? Did Utranos and the other Tals kill her? Not that it should matter to Mu at all. After all, the woman had been holding him at gunpoint.

Still, though, he found himself hoping that she was alright.

Mu opened the door to the little reading room and peered out into the open Archives until he was convinced that the coast was clear. Then he scooted out, walking quickly out between the stacks. The original crumpled translation was clutched firmly in his hand.

He darted between several shelves, then stopped at a random stack.

Mu took a deep breath, preparing himself to commit the worst deed he had ever done in his life.

He pushed the crumpled parchment onto a random shelf.

A deliberate misfiling. That simple little act went against everything that Mu believed in, everything that he had ever stood for as an archivist.

Still, these were rather unique circumstances.

Mu glanced at the filing location, and quickly memorized it. That was one benefit of working in the Archives for so long. Mu might not remember his wife’s birthday or, occasionally, his own, but he never forgot a stack filing number.

With a sigh Mu turned, lowered his hood, and began to walk towards the lower east archive chamber.

He got farther than he expected. It wasn’t until halfway up the third floor, next to the Noble House fealty contract section, that a strong hand dropped down on his shoulder.

“You,” came a rough voice.

Mu twisted his head around to see one of the muscled Tals in the purple-tinted armor of House Oraani.

Perfect. Better than Mu could have hoped for.

“Where do you think you’re going, you piece of wyrm-dung?” the warrior snarled.

“Nowhere,” Mu stammered. “I just—”

“Then you won’t mind coming along with us,” came a voice from behind Mu.

Mu started to turn his head back around, but he never saw who the second person was.

The fist that crashed into his face completely blocked his view.
